See Positano without dealing with the coastal road

Positano is the picture everyone comes to the Amalfi Coast for — but reaching it by car in summer can be the least glamorous part of a trip. From Praiano there is a far better way: arrive by sea.

The view the postcards use

Approaching Positano from the water gives you the classic head-on view of the village, its pastel houses cascading down to the sea beneath the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta. It is the perspective the photographs are taken from, and it only exists from a boat.

No traffic, no parking

The coastal road into Positano is narrow and, in high season, slow, with parking that is both scarce and expensive. Leaving from Praiano you skip all of it: a short, scenic cruise west and you are anchored off the beach, camera ready.

Stop ashore, or just admire

Depending on your tour you can pause for a short stop ashore to wander the lanes and shops, or simply take in the village from the water before continuing along the coast. On a private trip the choice is yours.
